Madeline Wilkinson has been out since she was 14, the same year she started coloring her hair.

She’s always loved vibrant hair colors, but she never made a big deal about her sexuality. That changed two months ago when a cosmetology classmate suggested Wilkinson dye her hair with the colors of the rainbow flag, the symbol of gay pride. Since then, it’s been a conversation piece.

“I get a lot of mixed signals,” said Wilkinson, 18, of Girard. “Some people like it, some people hate it. I don’t try to argue with people, but if they bring it up to me, we’ll talk about it.”

She recently spent three hours in a chair at Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy in Erie, where she’s a student, getting another dye job. The same six colors of the flag: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.

“It’s me,” said Wilkinson as she waited for the colors to set. “All of me is on my head. I love my hair.”

She hopes her human hair colors will make connections with others who are gay, or who just want to talk about it.

“Some people are scared,” she said. “They don’t want to come out. They just need something to help them.”
